Lowry Elementary School

Denver Public Schools

Lowry Elementary School is a new Denver Public School building. Gail Pelsue was the project architect for this 69,000 sq. ft. building which was constructed in 2003. The housing surrounding the school is an infill of the closed Lowry Air Force Base and was planned with New Urbanism principles. The dark brick façade relates to the traditional homes of old Denver and the new homes surrounding the school. The curved roof of the gym is a gesture of respect relating to the nearby hangar which was preserved from the original Air Force Base.

Cast concrete window sills and a water table course base, provide interest in the façade. Ms. Pelsue managed the entire project including the building, landscaping, playgrounds, and the remote utility building serving the school campus.
